Not Sure Which Plan Fits Your Situation? Each of the Pomona Plan's life income arrangements works differently. Here's a quick overview.
Charitable Gift Annuity A Pomona Plan charitable gift annuity (CGA) converts your gift of cash or appreciated securities into fixed, guaranteed payments for life, backed by the full financial resources of Pomona College. Your rate never changes, a portion of each payment is typically tax-free, and you receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction in the year of your gift. Simple to establish, with no setup fees or ongoing costs. Charitable gift annuities can also be funded directly through a one-time transfer from your IRA. Minimum gift: $25,000. Minimum age: 60.
Deferred Charitable Gift Annuity A deferred charitable gift annuity works like a standard CGA, but you decide when payments begin. The longer you wait, the higher your rate, making it an effective way to secure additional retirement income if you don’t need to increase your cash flow immediately. You receive an immediate tax deduction in the year of your gift, and if you fund with appreciated securities, capital gains recognition is deferred until payments begin. Minimum gift: $25,000. Minimum age at start of payments: 60.
Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT) A charitable remainder annuity trust (CRAT) pays you a fixed dollar amount every year regardless of the trust’s annual performance. You receive an immediate income tax charitable deduction for your gift. The trust is tax exempt, so you avoid capital gains tax on the sale of appreciated assets transferred into the trust, allowing your trustee to reinvest the full value when diversifying. Payments to beneficiaries are generally taxed as ordinary income, though a portion may be taxed at lower capital gains rates. Minimum gift: $100,000.
Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT) A charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT) pays you a fixed percentage of its value each year — so if the trust grows, your income grows with it. The most flexible of the Pomona Plan life income arrangements, a CRUT can be funded with cash, appreciated securities, real estate or other illiquid assets, and additional gifts can be made over time. There are multiple tax benefits associated with a CRUT. You receive an immediate income tax charitable deduction for your gift. The trust is tax exempt, so you avoid capital gains tax on the sale of appreciated assets transferred into the trust, allowing your trustee to reinvest the full value and pursue greater tax-free income growth. Payments to beneficiaries are generally taxed as ordinary income, though a portion may be taxed at lower capital gains rates. Minimum gift: $100,000.
